この歌は1881年（明治14年）発行の「小学唱歌集」初編に「美しき」という曲名で掲載されました。 スコットランド民謡 で「The Blue Bells of Scotland」という曲名で、そのまま訳すと「スコットランドの釣鐘草」となります。

その歌詞の内容は戦争に行った恋人を思い、彼の帰りを待つ女性の心境を歌った愛の歌です。
